The name Shelby is inextricably woven into the 50 plus years of Mustang heritage and Mustang spirit. Shelby’s are instantly recognised for their high performance engineering and styling, and are the dream vehicle for most Mustang owners, let alone Mustang fans. The Shelby legend kicked off in 1965, when Ford first entered into an alliance with the California based speed shop Shelby American run by ex racer Carroll Shelby. At that time Shelby had just launched his venomous Cobras, taking on the Ferraris at Le Mans.
The first Shelby Mustang was the 1965 GT350, followed by the 428 ci powered GT500 in 1967. These models continued through the 1969/70 model, and then a break until Ford renewed its association with Shelby in 2007, with the launch of the Shelby GT and the GT500, followed by the GT500KR (King of the Road) with 540 hp. The GT350 was launched in 2011, evoking the spirit and style of the same model back in 1965. Whilst sadly Carroll Shelby passed away in 2012, his company continues, as does the close association with Ford’s Mustangs. Look out for the wild Shelby ponies in the latest generation models!
