1967 - 1968
FIRST GENERATION: 1964–1973
The Mustang was completely redesigned for 1967 - 68, longer and wider, a more aggressive grille and frontal treatment, a unique concave rear panel and taillights, a host of new interior features giving greater luxury, comfort and convenience, and enhanced safety features. Whilst retaining the original wheelbase, front suspension was upgraded for better handling and steering. But the big news was under the bonnet, where the 302 V8 replaced the 289, and the 390 ci Thunderbird engine was a new option, rated at 320 hp, and enhancing Mustang’s performance reputation. In 1968, Ford went even further, with limited availability of the Mustang 428 Cobra Jet, with a rated 335 hp (but actually in excess of 400!)
