The model name “Boss” is synonymous with the heydays of Ford’s motorsport inspired management in the late 1970’s, chasing success in the “pony wars” in the showroom and on track in the Trans Am racing series. The Boss Mustang first appeared in 1969, a high performance built-to-race model engineered in house by Ford (rather than an outside company such as Shelby). The favoured engine was a high revving 302 V8, dictated by the 5 litre limit in the racing series. Boss 429’s also featured in 1969 and 1970.

The Boss carried over into the 1971 model, this time in 351 form, before the Boss range was dropped as fuel crisis concerns took over. Despite the short 3 year market life of the Boss models, their name and recognition is legendary within the Mustang story. Hence it was no surprise to see Ford briefly re-launch a modern Boss 302 Laguna Seca in 2012, faithful to the original ’69 Boss in every way. Will they do it again?!
