Ford CEO Jim Farley Shuts Down Future Mustang Cobra, Boss Models

23 Jan

Last year, The Blue Oval filed to trademark both "Cobra" and "Dark Horse Boss," potentially previewing the return of two variants from Ford Mustang history. Given the fact that we knew Ford was cooking up at least one new Mustang, many believed that we could see a Cobra and/or Boss revival, but that isn't exactly what happened. Rather, the Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC debuted last week as a successor to the S550-generation Shelby GT500.

Ford has employed a rather two-sided strategy as of late that's both focused on reviving model names from the past while also conjuring up new ones that it doesn't have to license from other entities - such as Shelby or GT500 - making this move a bit confusing. However, Ford CEO Jim Farley did provide an explanation for why the automaker didn't opt to simply revive Cobra, Boss, or any other nameplates from pony car history.
